The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan’s academic medical center, Michigan Medicine, and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, surveyed over 1,200 patients who had previously consulted with providers at one of the two health systems. The patients were asked to evaluate a model physician based on seven different backgrounds and rate their perception of the physician’s knowledge, trustworthiness, caring approach, approachability, and professionalism in each setting.
In the era of Telehealth Services, doctors and healthcare providers have been conducting virtual visits from the comfort of their homes. However, a recent study published in JAMA Network Open sheds light on the significance of a provider’s background during these virtual consultations.
The findings suggest that having a professional background, such as an office with diplomas or a plain solid-color background, can positively influence patients’ perceptions of their healthcare providers, particularly during the first appointment. This is especially important for providers who have not met the patient in person before.
On the other hand, home environments with visible kitchens or beds should use blurred or virtual backgrounds to maintain a professional appearance and ensure patient comfort.
The study underscores the importance of providers’ appearance and environment during telehealth visits, even when they are conducted from the comfort of their homes. By creating a professional and inviting background, providers can help build trust and confidence with their patients, enhancing the overall telehealth experience.
