Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, has released the list of its most-viewed articles for the year 2023. The English version of Wikipedia accumulated over 84 billion views this year, according to the Wikimedia Foundation. Topping the list was the article about ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that has gained widespread attention in various sectors such as education, healthcare, law, and even religion. The article has also fueled discussions on the potential benefits and risks associated with generative AI, which is extensively covered on its Wikipedia page.

The second most-viewed article on Wikipedia in 2023 was the annual list of deaths, which consistently attracts high traffic year after year. Notable figures such as Matthew Perry and Lisa Marie Presley, who passed away during the year, garnered significant interest, contributing to the article’s popularity. In third place was the much-anticipated 2023 Cricket World Cup, marking the first time cricket-related content has made it to the top of Wikipedia’s most-viewed articles.

Other cricket-related entries that made the top 25 list included the Indian Premier League at number four. This year’s list also saw the inclusion of diverse topics such as the film “Oppenheimer,” which secured the fifth spot, and “Jawan,” another popular film that ranked eighth. The television series “The Last of Us” and upcoming films like “Barbie” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” also attracted a significant number of views.

Notable personalities like Taylor Swift, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Elon Musk also made it to the top 25 list, reflecting the public’s interest in their lives and achievements. The list wasn’t limited to entertainment and sports, as it also featured articles related to global events such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Andrew Tate controversy.

According to the Wikimedia Foundation, the list was compiled using data from English Wikipedia as of November 28. The nonprofit organization plans to update the numbers for the full year on January 3, 2024. In terms of user engagement, the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, and Australia emerged as the top countries accessing English Wikipedia in 2023.

The release of this list highlights the immense popularity and relevance of Wikipedia as a go-to source for information. With billions of views and a diverse range of topics, it serves as a testament to the platform’s value in providing accessible and reliable knowledge to people worldwide.
