Is Your Penicillin Allergy Really an Allergy?

by

Penicillin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, is often reported as an allergy by patients. However, recent findings suggest that the actual rate of penicillin allergies is much lower than reported. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only less than 1% of people with a reported penicillin allergy are truly allergic.

Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a pediatric infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, explains that relying on a listed penicillin allergy can lead to risks in treatment for bacterial infections. Penicillin is often the preferred antibiotic for conditions such as strep throat, ear infections, and pneumonia.

If a patient’s medical records indicate a penicillin allergy, alternative treatment options need to be explored. However, these alternatives may not be as effective or may have more severe side effects than penicillin. Dr. Rajapakse emphasizes that people often mistake side effects of antibiotics for allergic reactions.

True antibiotic allergies typically present as symptoms such as hives or a raised, itchy rash. However, it’s estimated that approximately 50% of people will outgrow their penicillin allergy within five years.

It is important for patients to discuss their allergies with their primary care provider. If enough time has passed since the initial reaction, individuals may be eligible for allergy testing and removing the penicillin allergy from their medical records. Various reliable methods, such as penicillin skin testing and oral challenge doses, can be used to evaluate the presence of a penicillin allergy.

Therefore, it is recommended that individuals who suspect that they have a penicillin allergy consult with their healthcare team to determine if testing is necessary. This way, they can receive appropriate treatment for bacterial infections without unnecessary risks to their health.
